We engage Thunder Bay youth in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.) through sailing.
SUMMER CAMPS
Learn what makes a sailboat move and how to sail!
High school youth aged 14-18 are invited to participate in our unique two week S.T.E.M. summer camps. Through these summer camps, youth engage in a hands-on, experiential learning environment that uses sailing as the platform over a two week period. Each day includes a half day of engaging, sailing based, S.T.E.M. learning delivered by Ontario certified teachers and a half day of sailing instruction from an accredited local sailing school.
Our summer camps are also designed to inspire youth to take an active role in maintaining our freshwater resources through environmental stewardship. In addition to daily S.T.E.M. activities, we host local guest speakers during various “lunch and learn” sessions. The speakers share their inspiring stories including details about career opportunities in their field.
Join our email list to be the firsts to receive information about our 2023 summer camps once details are confirmed.
Sailing Into S.T.E.M. is a registered not-for-profit organization based in Thunder Bay, Ontario that advocates, engages, and provides youth with access to S.T.E.M. sectors.
ABOUT
Our mission is to develop a highly skilled group of youth and increase their interest in S.T.E.M. subjects. While we engage all youth, our focus is on engaging groups of youth that are underrepresented and do not have access to S.T.E.M. opportunities in our community. We offered our first summer camps in 2022 are currently working on offering summer camps on an annual basis, developing a sailing-focused S.T.E.M. curriculum to support our summer camps, engaging youth in environmental stewardship through various inquiry and leadership opportunities, and offering incentive bursaries for graduating students excelling in S.T.E.M. subjects.
Sailing Into S.T.E.M. was founded by Dan Turk, a local science high school teacher and a seasoned sailor, to share his passion for sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics and sailing with youth in the community.
